Working and living in National Parks for over ten years led me to find inspiration in the natural world. Tree bark becomes a background texture, patterns and colors of fallen leaves inspire a logo, the intricacies of a birds nest develop into a type layout, the light that falls across a mountain range during a thunderstorm becomes a color pallet. The simplicity and beauty of nature has and will continue to cultivate my design aesthetic. Khoi Vinh said “Design is nothing if not order applied to disorder” and this is what appeals to me about graphic design – it is organized creativity. Like a puzzle, I am able to figure out how the pieces fit together to encourage people to read the article, buy the product, go see the movie, or just be inspired. As nature seemingly puts order to chaos (think the law of gravity, how our bodies function, the cosmos) graphic design helps to explain, communicate, and put order to the world around us.
